Quick answer
A sofa in good condition with its fire label can often be donated or sold. A worn one goes to a council bulky collection or the tip, where upholstered seating is handled separately. If it is upstairs or will not fit in the car in Portsmouth, a private collection is easier.
Your options at a glanceSection titled Your%20options%20at%20a%20glance
If your sofa or armchair is clean, undamaged and still has its fire-safety label, donating or selling it is the best first step. Otherwise Portsmouth City Council runs a paid bulky waste collection, you can take it to the Port Solent tip, or you can book a private collection. Council prices and rules change, so check the official page before booking.

Why sofas need special handlingSection titled Why%20sofas%20need%20special%20handling
Sofas, armchairs and other upholstered household seating can contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Under the Environment Agency guidance on GOV.UK, waste seating containing POPs must be incinerated at an authorised facility. Landfill is not permitted, and it must not be mixed with other waste, including in a skip or bay at a household waste recycling centre.
Portsmouth City Council's Port Solent tip page lists upholstered domestic seating (sofas, armchairs, stools, bean bags and cushions) among the items with restrictions or charges. It asks you to keep sofas, cushions and padded chairs whole where possible, and to bag or tape any broken parts so pieces do not escape in transit. That separate handling is why a sofa can cost more to dispose of than other furniture.

If you pay Council Tax to Portsmouth City Council you can use its bulky waste collection service. Collections start from £40, booked by phone on 023 9284 1105, as set out on the booking page. Sofas are collected, but not if they are too heavy for two people to lift or are waterlogged, and items longer than 2 metres are not collected. Chargeable collections run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Anyone receiving Council Tax Support gets one free collection in any rolling 12 months (proof required), on Tuesdays only, covering up to 2m³ (roughly a two-seater sofa, or a washing machine and an armchair).
Under the collection terms and conditions, items must be out by 6am at the agreed collection point, at ground level and easy to reach from the road, such as a front garden or driveway. They must be kept separate from your other belongings and covered, because wet items may be refused. Crews do not enter your home or back garden, and items not agreed at booking will not be taken. Cancelling or removing items within two working days of the collection incurs a £25 fee. The council pages do not set out a separate arrangement for upholstered seating, so ask when you book.

Taking a sofa to the tipSection titled Taking%20a%20sofa%20to%20the%20tip
Portsmouth residents can take big household items to the Portsmouth household waste recycling centre, known as the Port Solent tip. Visits are booked online, or by calling 023 9284 1105 (option 5) if you live in Portsmouth and cannot use the online system. The booking system checks whether a van or trailer needs a permit. The council's bulky waste page lists upholstered domestic seating among the restricted or charged items, but does not give the charge or say how it is stored, so confirm the current rules and cost before you load the car. Keep the sofa whole, and bag or tape any broken parts.
Donate or sell a sofa that is still in good conditionSection titled Donate%20or%20sell%20a%20sofa%20that%20is%20still%20in%20good%20condition
Portsmouth City Council's bulky waste page says that charities including Sue Ryder, the British Heart Foundation and DEBRA offer free collections. The British Heart Foundation's free furniture collection starts with a postcode check to see whether it collects in your area, and your local store should contact you within five working days. Its item condition rules say items must be sellable, and upholstered items must have a fire safety label attached. Sofas missing seat cushions, and upholstery with rips that expose the inner material, are refused.
Under the GOV.UK reuse guidance, a sofa only counts as reusable if it needs no more than minor repair and its use complies with the law, for example by having appropriate fire safety labels. If it fails those tests it is waste. You can also try selling a sofa in good condition through a local online marketplace.
When a private collection makes senseSection titled When%20a%20private%20collection%20makes%20sense
A paid collection is worth considering if the sofa is upstairs, will not fit through the door without dismantling, nobody can lift it, or there is other furniture to go at the same time. The council's crews do not enter your home, so everything has to be outside by 6am. House Clearance Portsmouth carries the sofa out of the room, dismantling where needed, and disposes of it through the correct licensed route.

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions
Will Portsmouth City Council collect a sofa?Section titled Will%20Portsmouth%20City%20Council%20collect%20a%20sofa%3F
Yes. Its bulky waste service collects sofas from £40, unless they are too heavy for two people to lift or are waterlogged. Prices change, so check the page before booking.
Can a charity collect my sofa?Section titled Can%20a%20charity%20collect%20my%20sofa%3F
Sometimes. The British Heart Foundation offers a free collection in areas it covers, but the sofa must be sellable and have its fire safety label attached. Without the label, or with tears exposing the filling, it will be refused.
Can I cut a sofa up to get rid of it?Section titled Can%20I%20cut%20a%20sofa%20up%20to%20get%20rid%20of%20it%3F
It is better not to. The GOV.UK guidance says waste seating containing POPs must not be mixed with other waste, and the council asks you to keep sofas whole where possible when taking them to the tip. We have not confirmed a council rule on household bins, so ask the council before putting any part of a sofa in one.
