Quick answer
If you only have a few eligible items and can leave them outside for collection, the council route may be enough. For indoor removals, mixed loads, urgent jobs or awkward access in Portsmouth, private clearance is usually the more practical option.

What Portsmouth Council currently chargesSection titled What%20Portsmouth%20Council%20currently%20charges
Portsmouth City Council does not publish a simple first-item, additional-item price list. Instead, standard bulky waste collections start from £40, with the exact cost confirmed when you call to book. Fridges and freezers are priced separately at £40 each (£60 for an American-style fridge), on top of any other items collected.
Residents who receive Council Tax support can claim one free collection every rolling 12 months, covering up to 2m³ of waste — roughly the size of a two-seater sofa, or a washing machine and an armchair. Larger loads, items over 2m in length, or a second collection within the same 12 months fall outside the free allowance and are charged at the standard rate.

The rules that matter before you bookSection titled The%20rules%20that%20matter%20before%20you%20book
The council's price is only part of the picture. Whether the service actually works for your situation usually comes down to how and when items need to be left out, and what happens if plans change.
Where items must be leftSection titled Where%20items%20must%20be%20left
Items must be put out by 6am on the day of collection, at the agreed collection point, at ground level and within easy reach of the road. If you live in a flat-fronted property, you can put items out on the pavement from 7pm the evening before.
Council crews will not enter your property or back garden at any time — everything has to be carried out and left in position by you before they arrive. The council may also reject items over 2m in length, so a single large piece isn't always guaranteed a collection.
Changes, refunds and assisted collectionsSection titled Changes%2C%20refunds%20and%20assisted%20collections
Changes or cancellations need at least 2 working days' notice to qualify for a full refund. Cancelling or removing items after that point incurs a £25 fee deducted from any refund, and the same £25 fee applies if a crew arrives but can't collect because items aren't accessible.
If a free collection is missed for this reason, you won't be able to book another free collection for the next rolling 12 months. The council's published terms don't set out an assisted-collection option for residents who are unable to move items themselves, so anyone in that position — or anyone who can't guarantee items will be out and accessible by 6am — is likely better served by a private team that carries items out for you.

When the council service is usually enoughSection titled When%20the%20council%20service%20is%20usually%20enough
The council route tends to work well when a job is straightforward and you can meet its placement rules:
- You have a small number of large household items, comfortably within the 2m³ free-collection guide size
- Everything can be carried outside and left at ground level before 6am on collection day (or from 7pm the evening before for flat-fronted properties)
- Nothing is longer than 2m, since oversized items can be rejected
- You can work around the council's Tuesday and Wednesday collection days rather than needing something sooner
- You, or someone else, can move every item to the collection point unaided, since there's no assisted-collection option
- You qualify for a free collection through Council Tax support and haven't used your allowance in the last 12 months
When private clearance is the better optionSection titled When%20private%20clearance%20is%20the%20better%20option
Private clearance tends to make more sense once the job is bigger, more urgent, or harder to access:
- Items are still upstairs, in a garage, loft or back garden that the council won't enter
- You have more waste than the free 2m³ allowance, or a single item over 2m long
- You need everything gone by a specific date, such as an end of tenancy, house sale completion or probate deadline
- You or the person clearing the property can't physically move heavy items to the kerb
- The job is closer to a full house clearance, with mixed waste, furniture and appliances, rather than a handful of separate items
- You want one visit that sorts, removes and disposes of everything, including donation and recycling

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions
Is council bulky waste collection cheaper than private clearance?Section titled Is%20council%20bulky%20waste%20collection%20cheaper%20than%20private%20clearance%3F
For a small number of items you can carry outside yourself, the council's standard collection from £40 is usually the cheaper option, and it's free for eligible Council Tax support claimants once every 12 months. Private clearance costs more, but it includes the labour of moving items from wherever they are in the property, sorting mixed waste, and disposing of everything in one visit — which often works out better value once you account for the time and effort of doing it yourself.
Will the council collect items from inside my home?Section titled Will%20the%20council%20collect%20items%20from%20inside%20my%20home%3F
No. The council's terms are clear that crews will not enter your property or back garden at any time — items need to be carried out and left at ground level, accessible from the road, before the crew arrives. If items are upstairs or you can't move them yourself, a private clearance team is the practical alternative.
What if I have more waste than the council limits allow?Section titled What%20if%20I%20have%20more%20waste%20than%20the%20council%20limits%20allow%3F
Free collections are capped at around 2m³, and items over 2m in length may be rejected altogether. Paid collections are quoted by phone rather than a fixed item list, but mixed loads of general waste alongside furniture and appliances are usually better handled by a private clearance company that can take everything in one visit, rather than working through the council's size and volume limits.
