Portsmouth clearance guide

Portsmouth household waste recycling centre: a practical guide

A practical guide to the household waste recycling centre that serves Portsmouth: opening times, booking, vans and permits, and the DIY waste it charges for.

By Oliver Bennett ·

Recycling containers at a household waste recycling centre near Portsmouth

Quick answer

Check the opening times and whether you need to book before you load the car. Household rubbish, garden waste and most recycling are usually free, DIY waste such as rubble and plasterboard is often charged, and vans may need a permit. If you have no van or a big load in Portsmouth, a collection can be simpler.

Where the Portsmouth tip isSection titled Where%20the%20Portsmouth%20tip%20is

Portsmouth residents use the Paulsgrove household waste recycling centre, at Paulsgrove Portway, Port Solent, PO6 4UD. Portsmouth City Council lists it in its guide to the recycling centre and gives 023 9238 7015 as the site phone number. The council's guide points to Hampshire County Council for the full lists of accepted and unaccepted materials, so check that before you load the car.

Opening timesSection titled Opening%20times

The council's visiting the recycling centre page says the site is open seven days a week:

DatesHours
1 October to 28 February9am to 4pm
1 March to 31 March9am to 5pm
1 April to 30 September9am to 6pm

The site is closed every day from 1pm to 1.30pm, and on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Hours and closures can change, so recheck the council page before you travel.

Do you need to book?Section titled Do%20you%20need%20to%20book%3F

Yes. The council says you must book an appointment online before visiting, and waste cannot be brought in on foot (you can book a slot for a bike). Its FAQs say slots run in half-hour windows and can be booked up to 7 days ahead. Arrive within your slot, as early arrivals may be asked to rejoin the queue and late arrivals may be turned away. Bring your booking confirmation. If you live in Portsmouth (PO1 to PO6 and some PO7 addresses) and cannot use the online system, call 023 9284 1105 and select option 5.

Vans, trailers and permitsSection titled Vans%2C%20trailers%20and%20permits

You need a permit to use a van, pick-up or trailer at any Hampshire recycling centre. The council's permit page says a permit costs £20, is digital, and lasts for 12 visits or 12 months, whichever ends first. Each booking uses one visit, a household can hold one permit at a time, and the permit covers household waste only. Commercial vehicles are only allowed if they are the resident's sole means of transport and hold a valid van permit. The pages we read do not mention proof of address, so check when you book.

What you can take for freeSection titled What%20you%20can%20take%20for%20free

Portsmouth City Council's page on what you can bring does not itemise accepted materials and refers you to Hampshire County Council for the full list. What it does confirm:

  • Garden waste is accepted.
  • Each Hampshire household may deposit up to eight 50-litre rubble bags, or four bulky items, free of charge every four weeks (from 1 January 2024).

What the tip charges forSection titled What%20the%20tip%20charges%20for

Waste above the free DIY allowance is chargeable to cover specialist disposal costs, according to the council's what you can bring page. That page gives no amounts and sends you to Hampshire County Council's chargeable waste page, so we have not quoted prices here. Separate anything you will have to pay for before you arrive, and check the current charges first.

What the tip will not takeSection titled What%20the%20tip%20will%20not%20take

The council's pages do not publish a full refused list, so check Hampshire County Council's list of unaccepted materials. What the council does say:

  • Trade or business waste is not covered by the free allowance, and the permit page says only household waste is allowed.
  • Waste cannot be brought in on foot.
  • Commercial vehicles are only allowed if they are your only means of transport and hold a valid van permit.

When it is easier to have it collectedSection titled When%20it%20is%20easier%20to%20have%20it%20collected

A collection is often simpler if you have no van or permit, cannot find a slot within the next week, have a load too big for one trip, or need to clear heavy furniture or a whole room. House Clearance Portsmouth loads from anywhere on the property and takes mixed waste in one visit.

No van, no booking slot?

We collect mixed household rubbish, furniture and garden waste across Portsmouth, loaded from anywhere on the property, usually the same week.
